Intro to Music Masterworks Final Paper Jazz music was originally developed by African Americans during the start of the twentieth century. Throughout the semester we have studied the timeline of musical periods including the Romantic and Classical eras of music. Becoming internationally popular in the 1920s, jazz music has been typically described as Americas Classical Music. The musical periods we have discussed in this course have influenced and show a strong relation to jazz music and also jazz musicians. Among these musicians, is John Coltrane, considered one of the greatest jazz saxophonists and composers of all time. During this stage of his career he released an individual album Blue Train recorded by Alfred Lion and Blue Note productions, which was considered the powerhouse of this era in jazz. Blue Train was one of the most important and best-selling albums that Blue Note has ever released. In the late 50s through the early 60s, Coltrane was welcomed back by Miles Davis and company since at this point he was drug-free. Jazz critic Ira Gitler invented the term sheets of sound expressing the one of a kind style of Coltranes music during this era with Davis. During this time they wrote sessions like Milestones and Kind Of Blue and also recorded the hit single, So What which was recorded in 1959 with Coltrane soloing. Miles Davis and John Coltrane put together amazing jazz that we appreciate today, but the audience at that present time were very critical. It should also give an indication of the structure of what follows, and you might also discuss key terms here. The literature review will make up the main part of your dissertation if you are doing a study with secondary sources only. For studies including primary research, it should provide a background to this research. In either case, it will look at previous work in the field whether theoretical work or empirical studies. It’s important not just to describe existing work but also to engage with it critically. You are likely to define your research question at the end of the literature review, particularly in studies including primary data. The Methodology will deal with the research methods you use, and will explain what the methods are and justify why you use them. Here you will explain why you chose to do primary or secondary research. In general, if you are doing primary research the methodology section will be much longer as it will cover data collection, sampling, data analysis and other details. You will also need to discuss ethics here, particularly if your research involves the participation of human subjects. The results section is only relevant for primary studies. How you present the results will depend on the type of data you are collecting (presentation conventions for quantitative and qualitative data are very different). The results and discussion section are sometimes combined. The discussion and conclusion can also be combined, though this is relatively unusual. While some secondary reviews can consist only of a literature review, it is also possible to have a separate discussion section, where ideas described in the literature review are analysed, compared and contrasted. The point of the discussion, whether your study is primary or secondary, is to link findings with the research question and themes explored in your literature review. This section should take a critical and analytic perspective. The references include all the texts you cited during your dissertation. Make sure you understand what referencing system you are required to use, and stick to it. There are multiple versions of some systems, for example Harvard, so also ensure you use the version your course requires. The appendices contain information which was too long to include in the body of the text. Through the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly my friend Dante has been my succor. He has offered me solace and guidance through my years in high school and always gave me the encouragement I needed to reach my goals. Rather, we were introduced when my Nonno—my grandfather—began reading me The Divine Comedy when I was just a little girl. â€Å"Sit on my lap, Bambolina, we’ll read Dante’s story,† Nonno would say in his thick Sicilian accent. Together we followed Dante’s journey through Inferno and Purgatorio. This main portion of Dante’s pilgrimage required him to have unwavering fortitude in order to reach his ultimate destination—Paradiso. It wasn’t until I contended with my own internal struggles that I realized the relationship Dante and I had. Thanks to Dante, aspiring is exactly what I have been doing. I consider my last two years of high school to be representative of Dante’s climb up Mount Purgatorio. Learning from mistakes is a prominent theme in this leg of Dante’s journey. I have used the knowledge I’ve acquired through difficult experiences to put myself in a place of placidity. Exercise and being active is a huge contributing factor to my ambition. Yoga relaxes the day’s stress away and kickboxing allows me to vent my frustrations. Additionally, I have discovered my love for science and take pride in my high marks in this area. Purgatorio is the shortest volume of The Divine Comedy, though in my life it will be the longest. I will eventually reach my version of Paradiso when I am able to apply knowledge I’ve attained from your school to researching medical advances that will save lives, or helping children’s hospitals with charitable care. I have learned from Dante and my Nonno that if I continue to aspire to le stelle—the stars—I will surpass any difficulty where I would find myself in Inferno. And for that lesson, I am forever indebted to my friend, Dante.
